When you first get this book, it seems a little thin, but if you want to help someone to learn to drive without falling out with them for the next 12 years, it's well worth it. However, this book is designed to be used with a qualified driving instructor (ADI), and is not a guide to teaching learners how to drive. What it will tell you is the best ways to give a learner extra driving practice and therefore help them pass sooner and become a more experienced driver.
If you learnt to drive a while ago, can't remember what it was like or learnt to drive when the roads were a lot quieter then you need this book. It will help to see the experience from the learner's point of view and teach you to be patient, and that is likely to help both you and the learner.
The book is set out in short sections with bullet points and big colour diagrams that really help to explain the situations. However, a large part of the book is the logbook, which you can only use if the ADI agrees and is available for free anyway.
As the official guide it covers all the important topics and all the information is up to date. However it leaves out a lot of information such as how to correctly perform manoeuvres or approach junctions, concentrating on what the learner is likely to do wrong and how to deal with it. This kind of information comes from a book like Driving: The Essential Skills. If you use both books together, learning to drive should be a lot easier (and you'll pass first time like my learner).
An Essential and Very Clear Guide

This book is for qualified drivers who want to help a learner to practise in between lessons from a driving instructor.
It is divided into four distinct sections.
Part one covers the essentials of being an accompanying driver (you). Topics include where you fit in, what to expect, your personal qualities (what to do and what to avoid), the practice vehicle and planning the practice sessions.
Part two covers the logbook topics. The official syllabus for learning to drive is split into a series of distinct topics and the book follows that list. Each topic is on a separate page and the same format is used throughout.
Firstly, there is an introduction to the topic. You are then told how you can help your learner and what to expect your learner to do, as a novice driver. Where appropriate, there is also an alert, warning you of potential problems and what you can do.
Part three of the book is a section on further information, for example about ADIs and a list of addresses. I found this section of the book of no use.
Part four is a copy of the logbook, where you and the ADI can record the learner's progress. Your learner may already have been issued with a separate logbook.
The book is written in a very clear and simple style. Don't be fooled by how small and thin the book is; everything is there in a compact format. The size is a very handy A5. Finding required information is very easy.
I have a couple of warnings about this book, that may influence your decision on whether or not to buy it.
Firstly, it is not a driving instruction manual. It does not teach how to perform the different manoeuvres; other books and professional instructors exist for that purpose.
Secondly, this book is a complement to professional tuition, not a substitute for it. Your learner needs to be taking lessons; your role is to provide the reinforcement in between those lessons, following the instructor's teaching, not your own way of driving.
If you are keen to help a learner become a safe and competent driver (and for you not to be a hindrance in the learning process), this book is an extremely useful one to have access to. A combination of professional tuition and private practice (supported by this book) will give your learner some important vital experience.
