A MUST HAVE FOR VISITS TO PLACES IN THE UK

Review Date: June 20, 2009
Reviewer: Mrs. Wendy Thomas,
we bought this to replace one that we have had from new, and had died due to overuse. A great book to have in the car on trips around the UK. The roads may have changed, but the little snippets of information inclued on towns and villages is invaluble to add interest on a day trip. The children have viewed visiting towns differently and with much more enthusiasm when told about its historical facts contained on these pages. Anybody interested in finding details about the places you visit this is a must have book.
An excellent road atlas - but an update is required

I have owned a copy of the Book of the Road since it came out. It has proved an invaluable resource for finding my way around the country via the more interesting routes.

As I don't like travelling on motorways a road atlas that provides clear maps and an easy transition from page to page is required to navigate the minor roads. The Book of the Road provides clear mapping, that whilst not as detailed as some OS maps, enables you to find your way to and from some of the most intersting bits of the country. Using this book I have found good routes from my home to the far South West of England without ever touching a Motorway. The detail on the maps is good enough, and precise enough, that even if I haven't used the map for part of a journey I can rapidly establish where I am when I do open the book.

The gazeteer provides a good, if basic, guide to the region that the current map page depicts. The major towns, attractions and some of the more picturesque areas are noted (together with facts about the area). Even more conveniently, the presence of the gazeteer provides a fold out map section on the right hand side of the page that makes East-to-West and West-to-East navigation effortless. In addition to this, fairly good town maps are provided at the back of the Atlas - particularly good ones of Central London.

In conclusion, this is an excellent Road Atlas combined with a good travel guide. My one complaint is that a newer version is required as this was published in 1996 and a number of new roads have opened since this date (some road numbers have also altered).
